New Media in Art 3

On page 152, Rush discusses video artist Bill Viola and it's interesting to read that Viola "describes his videos as visual poems in which he grapples with issues of identity and spiritual significance in the modern world." Similarly to Viola's statement, this is how I feel about the art pieces that I create, and that it is a way of expression, as Viola describes as "visual poems," and I agree with him, but the visual poems can also pertain to any medium as well. I was really drawn to Viola's piece entitled The Crossing, which is seen on page 154, which is presented on a screen showing a man on fire, and the reason why I like the piece is because to me, flames show intensity, which Viola could have wanted to personify. I also like how on page 156, Rush also discusses another piece from Viola, which I thought was pretty interesting, is called Room for St John on the Cross, and I felt a connection to it because the piece has a man speaking in Spanish, and this very much pertains to my Spanish Heritage, and is something I would like to keep in mind as an artist. Whenever I have the opportunity to create an art piece that pertains to who I am, the piece to me allows for me to express myself in ways that would be difficult to do in words.
